Guards Polo Club News Back
Oakley Court are kings of the Phoenician 18th July 2017

Of the 12-goal tournaments at Guards Polo Club by winning the Phoenician Cup Final at Guards Polo Club on Sunday. Although they had to battle hard to win this match, coming up against Mo Sheikh's competitive Bridge House of Twyford team in this final.

There was little air in the scores throughout the four chukkas and it was little surprise that the board was reading 6-6 as the first bell rang to mark the end of the fourth and final chukka. This galvanised Hernan Muzzio into creating a spectacular shot to goal to win the match for Oakley Court. Not surprisingly he was later named the The Polo Magazine Most Valuable Player. His brother, and team-mate, Alejandro Muzzio, received the Polo Times Best Playing Pony prize for Malvarda, a 9-year-old mare whom he had played in the fourth chukka.

Jock Green-Armytage, our Chairman, then made a presentation on behalf of all the members of Guards Polo Club to life playing member Eddy Arida, who created this tournament in 1982 and sponsored it for the next 35 years. Eddy even won the tournament twice himself with his own Phoenicians team.

Earlier in the day, another long-standing name at Guards Polo Club made a welcome return to the field of play - John Collins Talacrest. Although John watched the match from the sidelines, he saw his team defeat Libertine/Tempest 8-3 to win the Phoenician sub final.
