The Chairman of Guards Polo Club, Lt Col Sean O'Dwyer, the Board of Directors and our Playing and Social Members were deeply saddened to learn of the recent death of Captain Elizabeth Godwin. Lizzie was a Playing Military Member here at Guards Polo Club and competed for the home team in the Guards Ladies Charity Polo Match during our July Ladies' Day. She regularly represented the Household Cavalry on the polo field and earlier this year was a member of the winning Captains and Subalterns' Trophy team.
In addition to these achievements, Lizzie was an impressive member of the Armed Forces. Not only did she receive the Sword of Honour at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 2020 but went on to be the first female officer to receive a commission into The Life Guards. She served on several state ceremonial duties with the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, including the funeral of HM Queen Elizabeth ll and HM The King’s Coronation. At the time of her death Lizzie was inspiring future generations of soldiers at the Army Training Regiment in Pirbright, Surrey.
Guards Polo Club will publish a full tribute to Lizzie in the Club's 2026 Yearbook and we send our deepest condolences to Lizzie's family, friends and her polo team-mates.
